Synopsis

Where there is life, there is a generation of waste. To eliminate the production of waste is beyond human possibility. Around the world, recycling is recognized as a way to decrease the impacts on the environment. Brazil stands out in this promising scenario. Where there is life, there is a generation of waste. To eliminate the production of waste is beyond human possibility. Around the world, recycling is recognized as a way to decrease the impacts on the environment. Brazil stands out in this promising scenario. Since 2001 it is the world champion in the collection of aluminum cans, even while having Japan as a competitor, a giant in the sector. Brazilians also lay claim to a brand new plasma technology that is capable of completely separating the three components of long life packaging: paper, plastic and aluminum. The project was such a great success that it is being replicated in several countries in Europe. However it is not just the advances in technology that can give new roles to waste. Creativity can do this as well. In Amazonia, the largest tropical forest in the world, a hotel floats on the Negro River (the Black River), kept afloat by 400 thousand PET bottles. Nature gives thanks to the change of behavior by man and answers with new recycling possibilities. Did you know that one cup of coconut water generates one kilo of peel? And did you know that this peel can be transformed into objects for decoration? Every incentive to give new uses to things that were once considered trash now generates jobs and income. Just in Brazil, there are 800 thousand people working as collectors, many organized in cooperatives. Taking care of the environment today seems to be the only way to reach tomorrow intact. Recycling in this context is another way. It is a passage to the future.
